My partner’s pet snake is a banana ball python. His name is Artemis
This piece is my pride and joy. I’m very happy with the textures, the stylization, and the overall vibe of it. I spent months making every detail as perfect as possible.

Quality Time
Charcoal still life
2.5 hours
I gathered all the gifts and shared things from my boyfriend that I could find in my room and made a still life.
I’m proud that I made something look accurate in so little time, especially when I only spent an hour and a half on it and revised it for 45 minutes months afterward.

Sustained Investigation
Guiding question: Through my art, how can I interpret my role in my family’s lives, and my family’s role in my life?

My youngest sister, Rylie, spent the summer in North Carolina with her dad. I was able to stay connected with her online. This piece depicts me at home looking at a picture that she sent to me, imagining that she’s there.

I am the oldest of three kids. My middle sister is Korie, my youngest sister is Rylie. I wanted to depict how I feel as the eldest sibling. The chest contains a rose to show the beauty of siblinghood, and a framed picture of my sisters when they were little, capturing the youthfulness and trust I keep in my heart for them. I sewed gold string to the paper for the box details to represent our connection, and the felt cushion represents my love for them. The pattern in the back added some uniformity and chaos at the same time.

Ninth Birthday

Alcohol markers and blue ballpoint pen
I was inspired by Rylie’s 9th b-day party that took place in an indoor gym. I took on a much more parental role, and I didn’t even realize it until my teacher pointed it out to me while I was brainstorming. So, this piece represents the aspects of my siblinghood that are “parental.” It looks like any normal b-day party until you notice the signs and street lamps. These demonstrate my guidance and support in their lives. There’s graffiti littered around the room because I value individuality and voicing your opinion, and what gets more opinionated than graffiti?

SI 3 – “Ninth Birthday“

I struggled to come up with and accurately portray the concept of this piece. I still hadn’t formulated a definite guiding question yet, and my thoughts were all over the place. This is probably my most disorganized sketchbook assignment.
Page 1: I explored my feelings on certain topics, like moving out of my parents house and what holidays/traditions we have in my family.
Page 2: Sketches of some of the 4 topics that I wrote about on the first page
Page 3: My question originally only included my siblings, but I felt that I needed to start exploring my relationship with my parents too, and I also came to the realization that I take on a much more parental role in my sister’s lives than an older sibling. So, I listed my parents core values when raising my siblings versus my own.
Page 4: I finally started to sketch my final product, wanting to stick to the idea of my youngest sister’s birthday party that I sketched on the second page. The idea of representing guidance with street signs and self-expression with graffiti stuck with me and became the main focus of my piece, signs, lamps, and graffiti scattered everywhere throughout the room.
